Operational Readiness for Virtual Infrastructure
The worldwide leader in retail transaction processing services leveraged
4Base Technologies expert consulting services to push their virtualization
initiatives from being experimental and unsupported to being consistent,
repeatable and production-ready. Like many organizations, the company
had been informally deploying virtualization hosts in the lab environments
for some time but the implementations were informal and supported
in an ad-hoc manner by different engineering groups. When the company
decided to formally adopt platform virtualization as a part of the
overall corporate IT strategy, adoption of that technology came to
a screeching halt. Operating thousands of hosts running different
operating systems the production systems must be able to run specific
management tools and adhere to defined processes to ensure supportability
and be formally accepted by the Operations group. The company found,
however, that the different virtualization technologies being considered
for deployment in the production environment could not meet the standards
defined by the Operations group and therefore could not be supported
in the manner required.
4Base was brought in to help the organization integrate the different
virtualization technologies into their current and well-established
IT processes and standards. Using our proven Operational Readiness
for Virtualization methodology, 4Base started with a thorough discovery
process to understand the real requirements of the Operations group,
which were then put through a gap analysis with resulting assessments
and corrective blueprints. 4Base then led the remediation efforts,
which involved different groups within the organization including
Engineering, Operations, Process, Tools, Security, Capacity, etc.
in addition to external vendors including software manufacturers,
tools vendors and training providers. These efforts allowed the company
to bridge the gap to production-readiness making each of the virtualization
technologies compliant, secure and operationally accepted within the
enterprise. This in turn allowed the company to adopt and realize
the benefits of platform virtualization including added agility in
the IT environment along with both CapEx and OpEx cost savings.
